2016-11-23: Tying His Own Shoes
Nigel has occasionally worked on learning to tie his shoes for some time now. Today, he very nearly tied them all by himself, with only one loop just barely slipping through.

2016-11-12: Counting in Various Languages and Joke
Nigel and Dad were reading Childcraft's Mathemagic volume, particularly the part about counting in various languages. Nigel came up with a joke appropriate to the topic: "What do you get when you cross a wiener with a Fiat? Five." (In Russian, the number five is pronounced Pih-Yaht.)

2016-09-10: Volcano of Music
Nigel was learning Bach's Minuet 2 with Dr. Hofer today, and after learning a few notes, he kept going and played notes that followed simply out of instinct, never having played that song before. His description of what happened: "It's like a volcano of music erupting out of my brain."

2016-07-28: Sickness and Camping
A few weeks ago, I got sick with strep throat. It hurt a lot, so I took amoxicillin. Every time I took it, my stomach hurt. I was still taking it when we went camping in the Uinta mountains this past weekend. Then, in the morning, I had my breakfast and took my amoxicillin, and I threw up all my breakfast, everywhere. I had breakfast twice and threw it up both times.
We left and went to the InstaCare in Park City, and I was moaning the entire way there, because my stomach hurt a lot. I had a bit of water in the bathroom while waiting to be seen. In the exam room, I threw up again, explosively. Mom tried to catch it, but it splashed through her hand onto three chairs. Then, I got a little emesis bag in which to throw up, and had to change my clothes again, so I changed into a hospital gown and loose pants the clinic gave me. Then, we went into my room and I got to snuggle up with a blanket on the table. I got a shot of penicillin to take care of the streptococcus without upsetting my stomach or preventing me from eating, and a prescription for some Zofran tablets, to help me if my stomach becomes upset again.
After that, we went to Harmon's to pick up my prescription, then went home to get cleaned up. That night, we slept at home, and the next morning, Grammy came over and we went back up to the campground, which was near the Smith and Morehouse reservoir. We packed up the campsite, then took the canoe to the reservoir to paddle around for a few hours. Luke came along, and got to try out his life vest. He wasn't a big fan of the canoeing, but came anyway. He probably preferred sitting with Grammy while Mom, Dad and I went out together.
While on the water, we saw a humongous rope swing, and teenagers were jumping off the rope swing and doing cannonballs into the water. It was amazing. Usually, we put mini boats out into the water and go rescue them. This time, we played a new game, though. I jumped out of the boat and into the water and the canoe came and rescued me!

2016-07-17: Summer Update
4th of July
We set off a lot of fireworks and I liked it a lot. Our neighbors Trevor and Jenny came over with Natalia. We tried out a new type of sparkler. We usually just use Morning Glorys, but this year we tried out the neon pack. They lasted longer and had a brighter color, so I liked them a lot better. We didn't have very many of the big fireworks this year. The biggest firework we had this year was a Flaming Frog, which wasn't as much fun as last year, when we had more big fireworks.
Baseball Season
Baseball started this month, and I have had my first practice, which was pretty good. The games have been more fun than I thought. You can get players out, but they don't count the player as being out. It is still good to practice making the outs, though. They will give you as many tries to hit the ball as you want, but if you are really struggling, they will give you a tee. I am getting to play with two of my friends from school: Jaren and Eden. My team name is the Green Star Wars, and I am really not a big fan of that. I would prefer the Green Lasers or the Electrifiers.
Summerworks
This week during summer camp I changed out from my rock climbing week and started going swimming, which is really fun and I like it a lot. The only problem is that there is a long walk to get to my towel. I am learning a lot. I got moved out of Kellsie and Siena's den and into Paulino and Clara's den. It is a coincidence that Clara also plays a video game called Pokémon Go that I have been playing.
Wheeler Farm
On the subject of Pokémon Go, we visited Wheeler Farm this evening with Luke, to walk around. We tried to incubate a Pokémon egg while there, by putting it in an incubator and leaving the game running while walking around. We needed to walk 2.0 km with the game running, and we made it to 1.4 km.
-Nigel
It was remarkable how many people were playing Pokémon Go there. The game was released a few weeks ago, and it involves walking around in real life while the game is running on a phone or tablet computer. Far more people were at the farm than usual, and a clear majority had their cell phones out and were staring at them while walking. Different rewards are available for playing the game at different real-world locations. It seems Wheeler Farm is a good place for playing this.
Before playing that game, we adventured along the bank of the river that flows through the farm, with Luke and Nigel both quite excited. There was an unusually-large amount of water flowing in the river--as much as I have seen--and a burgeoning canal crossing over the top of it, as well.

2016-06-26: Summer Vacation 2016 - One Month In
I have started Summerworks, and rock climbing is really fun. I have been able to climb really high, and the obstacle course was my favorite thing. In ice skating, I am actually able to balance, and I am able to skate fast and do tricks.
Just today, I made my first good joke:
Three people were suspects for a murder. One was a giraffe, the second was a hippo, and the last was a lightbulb. Which one did they pick?
The lightbulb, because he was the most "lightly" suspect.
Also, today my mom and dad put up a swing which I really like to swing on. The seat is red and the rope is black and yellow, and it is attached to the tree in the backyard. I have to walk backwards and jump on to swing on it. It isn't like a regular swing; it is like a rope swing combined with a regular swing. I swung for most of the day.

2016-06-10: School Year Wrap-Up, and First Two Weeks of Summer Vacation
The Day Before the Last Day of School (May 26th)
After lunch we got to go up to the playground and there was a bunch of really cool stuff. First, there were fruit snacks and goldfish. Then, we got to go to water-slides (inflatables, on the playground). Then the fire department sprayed us with the hose. After that, we did a tug-of-war and a dunking machine. You threw a ball and when you hit a target, it dunked a person into water. Tons of people got dunked. In 2nd grade, I plan to get dunked.
The Last Day of School (May 27th)
We got to school and we got to go outside and do sidewalk chalk, and then we came back in and got Creamies (ice cream popsicles). Then we went outside and got seed pods out of plants we grew in class. Then, we got to go to recess, and after recess we had lunch, and after lunch we went back to class and had pizza and Red Vines licorice. Then after that school was over.
My teacher this year was Ms. McCandless. She has grey hair and she likes to wear a fuzzy red jacket. Her real name is Cindy. She was a really good teacher. For a thank you gift, I gave her a bar of dark chocolate (her favorite snack) and a purple pen, as she had requested. The chocolate bar had cherries in it and a picture of a walrus on the package. Ms. McCandless let us play chess and Apples to Apples whenever we finished our center activities with extra time.
Kids in my class this year included Lola, Gwen, Eden, Julie, Julia, Jaren, Asher, Owen, Calvin, Kaitlyn, Braden, Daniel, Jia Lai, Aneesh, Gray, Mason, and others. Lola wears glasses. Gwen and Eden are really nice. Julie is of Russian descent. Julia loves animals. Jaren likes violence. Asher also likes violence, but less. Owen likes the human body. Calvin is pretty much the same as Asher. Kaitlyn is also really nice. Braden likes to play chess. Daniel and Jia Lai are two of the best chess players in my entire class. Aneesh is Braden's only friend. Gray is named after the color gray, and his real name is Grayson. Mason really likes dogs and also Grayson and Mason's real names rhyme.
Day 1 of Summer Vacation (May 28th)
I was really excited when I woke up and found and got my new play store. It is really big and it has green and white stripes on the front, and it even has a place to hold captions and stuff (signage), and it has a red-and-white hood to keep people out of the sunlight.
Day 2
I got a really cool yo-yo and it was one of my favorite colors: see-through blue and neon green; and it has a hub stack and the word "Hubstack" filled in with silver.
Day 3
I got a new book and it is called Story of the Sea. It is a Childcraft annual and it is all about the ocean and it is really cool. It has some really cool seashells in it. I really like books and I like the ocean.
June 10th
I got another Childcraft volume, called Feathered Friends, and it is about birds.
(along the way...)
Three of my friends and I made up a song, parodying the theme song to the Little Einsteins TV show. It goes like this:
"We're going to explode
And get flushed down a commode
Shooting through the sewers
Little Kablooers"
The original version is:
"We're going on a trip
In our little rocket ship
Soaring through the skies
Little Einsteins"
